Christine Lagarde is taken again against Donald Trump. The president of the European Central Bank (ECB) criticized the “terrible language” of the US President on Monday with respect to the European Union, in response to his comments according to which the block for “damage” in the United States was formed.
She told the German Channel that the United States had encouraged the training of the European Union, adding that to affirm that “it had been created with the intention of affecting the United States is completely contradictory. This goes against history. And it is certainly not the purpose of this region.”
The US president made these types of comments about the EU earlier this year when he threatened to reach the block with strong customs taxes due to his commercial surplus with the United States.
Christine Lagarde said that Donald Trump’s comments were “part of the usual provocation we got used to, unfortunately,” but encouraged the EU to dialogue with the United States to try to reach an agreement.
Dialogue and negotiate
In his last attack on the EU, the US president threatened Friday to impose customs duties of 50% in the block from June 1, believing that negotiations “do not advance anywhere.”
But then he agreed on Sunday to postpone the fateful date of establishing customs duties in EU exports until July 9 after a phone call with the EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen.
For Christine Lagarde, you can’t “simply keep your arms crossed and pretend.”
“We have to start the dialogue, we have to work with your team and we have to listen to your proposal. We have to make proposals and we have to negotiate,” he said.
The EU is still subject to a 10 % tax that Donald Trump imposed last month to imports from almost all countries in the world, as well as customs tariffs of 25 % in cars, steel and aluminum.
The EU trade manager and his American counterpart had to meet on Monday afternoon after Donald Trump returned to the 50%customs tasks, according to the European Commission.
