The president of the American Federal Reserve (FED), Jerome Powell, met Thursday with President Donald Trump in the White House to discuss several economic points, including growth, employment and inflation, Fed reported in a statement. This meeting was organized by invitation from Donald Trump, said the American Central Bank.
The head of the Federal Reserve has not mentioned “his expectations of monetary policy, except to emphasize that the way to follow will depend completely on the economic information that comes and what it means to perspectives,” is written in the press release.
A growing tension between the two
Donald Trump has attacked Jerome Powell several times in the past, accusing him of not reducing interest rates, and expressed his desire that Powell is no longer at the head of the Fed, a position in which Trump had designated him during his first mandate in the White House, before Joe Biden confirmed Powell for a second mandate.
The US president recently mitigated his comments, declaring that he had no attention to fire Jerome Powell. However, this hypothesis has shaken the financial markets, which depend on the independence of the Fed in its decisions.
