Syria concluded an energy agreement on Thursday $ 7 billion with a consortium that brings together companies from the United States, Qatar and Türkiye, to rehabilitate its electric sector devastated by war. The firm took place at the Damascus Presidential Palace, in the presence of the interim president Ahmad al-Chareh and the special American envoy of Syria, Thomas Barrack.
According to Syrian authorities, the project establishes the production of 5,000 megawatts to cover about 50% of the country’s electricity needs. It is a “historical moment” and a “turning point” for Syrian infrastructure, devastated by almost 14 years of war, welcomed the Syrian Energy Minister, Mohammad al-Bashir. The consortium is directed by UCC Concession Investments de Qatar and includes the Turkish companies Kalyon Ges Enerji Yatirimlari and Cengiz Enerji, as well as Power International USA.
Construction of 4 gas power plants and a solar farm
In Syria, electricity cuts are chronic and can last up to 20 hours a day. The agreement establishes the construction of four gas power plants in the center and the east of the country, as well as a 1,000 megawatt solar farm in the south. Mohammad al-Bashir Bashir said that electric power plants would use US and European technologies.
The CEO of UCC, Ramez al-Khayyat, said the agreement would create more than 50,000 direct jobs and 250,000 indirect jobs. Since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, overthrown in December by an Islamist coalition today in power, relations have improved significantly between Damascus on the one hand, and Washington, Ankara and Doha on the other.
