After having shown spectacular growth of 3.2% in 2024 (the strongest in the euro zone), Spain wishes to maintain the dynamism of its economy. Spanish parliamentarians will examine a text of law aimed at regularizing almost 500,000 migrants and as a result of a draft citizen initiative assumed by the socialist government due to a blockade in Parliament. The only condition for these 470,000 foreigners to benefit from a residence permit and a work permit in Spain would be to reach the country before December 31.
In addition, another program points mainly to the reception of Latin America. In total, Spain should have almost a million new residents in three years.
The objective of the Executive is to overcome demographic aging due to one of the lowest birth rate in Europe. In 2024, the fertility index in Spain fell to 1.19 children per woman, its lowest level since 1941.
Several economic sectors could benefit from this wave of regularization, twice more important than the most recent 20 years ago: agriculture, construction or even hotels-restaurant, which are sectors where foreigners can already represent up to the middle of the workforce.
During the past year, the number of people in the activity in Spain has increased by almost 2.5%, to 21.76 million, in a context of strong economic growth, stimulated in particular due to the increase of the population linked to immigration and a high consumption driven by record tourism assistance.
Spain has become an immigration land in the last 25 years. Madrid wishes to attract a great workforce to occupy the positions that Spaniards no longer want to take. Therefore, in less than 30 years according to the OECD, the proportion of residents born abroad increased from 1.6 to 14%, remembers Bloomberg.
