Geneva Airport: 20% less flights on Monday due to a technical problem

It is significantly welcomed to an important Easyjet center, but also a rich clientele that moves through a private plane, as well as many diplomats and dignitaries affected at the headquarters of the European UN, which is located in Geneva.

The number of airplanes that can land at the Geneva airport, the second largest in Switzerland, will be reduced by 20% on Monday due to a technical problem, said Skyguide, the company in charge of air navigation in the country.

This reduction in the focus capacity is “a temporary safety measure that will remain in force until a solution to a latent technical problem can be implemented,” the company said in a statement, specifying that “the safety of air traffic has not been committed at any time.”

“In recent months, Skyguide has experienced seven dysfunctions of a system that provides the radar image to air traffic drivers,” said Skyguide, emphasizing that “certain work stations have lost the image for a few seconds. This phenomenon has occurred mainly in gin.”

Skyguide must make “an update of the systems” in the next few days, first in Geneva but also at the Zürich airport, the largest in Switzerland.

Incident series

In addition, “a working group established in this regard analyzes the situation continuously,” the company specifies.

The Geneva International Airport organized 17.8 million passengers in 2024 and the total landing and takeoff number reached 179,106 movements, according to official data published by the airport.

In particular, he welcomes an important center of the low -cost Easyjet company, but also a rich clientele that moves through a private plane, as well as many diplomats and dignitaries affected at the UN European headquarters, which is located in Geneva.

Skyguide has experienced a series of incidents in recent years.

At the end of June 2024, the company had already had to greatly reduce its ability to manage air traffic in Geneva due to breakdown caused by a violent storm.

In October 2023, it was the Zürich airport that had been affected by a computer failure in Skyguide, which had prevented any takeoff for two hours.

On June 15, 2022, the Swiss airspace had been closed for several hours due to a computer failure that affected air traffic control.
