The president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed the decree on Tuesday, June 3, from 25% to 50%, customs customs imposed on imports of steel and aluminum, two sectors considered strategic and that the white house tenant wishes to protect.
The decree specifies that the new surcharge will enter into force on Wednesday, at 12:01 am, local time (around 6 pm, French time).
“I considered that it was necessary to increase customs tariffs on steel and aluminum to adjust imports (…) to ensure that they do not endanger national security,” is detailed in the decree.
“Fight against excess cheap production”
According to the US president, “these new customs tasks will be more effective in combating the excess cheap production of foreign countries that undermine the competitiveness of the United States steel and aluminum industries.”
“Even if customs duties imposed so far have provided essential support for prices in the US market, they have not allowed these industries to develop and maintain a rate of use of production capacity that is sufficient for sustainability and with respect to national defense needs,” he also justified the text of the decree.
The surcharge of 25% of the imports of steel and aluminum by the United States had entered into force in mid -March. It was one of the first decisions in the issue of Donald Trump from his return to the White House.
The US president took advantage of steel, aluminum and aluminum industries, will be stronger than ever. “
New taxes that “undermine current efforts”
The European Commission reacted on Saturday, “strongly” regretting these new taxes that “undermine efforts in progress to achieve a negotiated solution” with the United States.
Canada, the leading supplier of these products in the United States, had filed a complaint on March 13 before the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the first wave of customs duties on steel and aluminum.
Then, the country estimated that these measures “are incompatible with the obligations of the United States” in international trade matters, the WTO said.
In 2024, the United States imported approximately half of steel and aluminum used in the country in 2024.
