Despite the pressure of the European Union, the airlines continue to make green washing (ecological liquidity) lying to their passengers about their real environmental impact, accuse consumer associations in a report on Tuesday.
In June 2023, these associations had filed a complaint with the European Commission against around twenty airlines. Since then, the European Union has opened an investigation, even in progress. These associations aim to deceive information about the supposed “carbon compensation” during reserves, by pouring a obole in projects presented as sustainable. The European Commission had already criticized these “false” accusations, which suggest consumers that such contribution can compensate for carbon dioxide emissions from an aircraft. The BEUC also denounces the prices presented as “green”, whose popularity feeds the emissions of the air sector instead of reducing them.
Progress but too often “minor”
In its report published on Tuesday, in the middle of the Bourget Fair, consumer associations remain a progress in certain companies. For example, Norwegian Air Shuttle eliminated climate -related accusations during reservations. The Hungarian company to Low cost Wizz Air has also withdrawn the possibility of “compensating” CO2 emissions. But the changes are too often “minor”, with simple reformulations or a new color code, laments the beuc, which significantly criticizes the “green” rates of the Lufthansa group.
Contacted, the Association of Airlines for Europe (A4E), which carries the voice of large companies in Brussels, referred to their previous comments, highlighting the importance of “clear and transparent information” about sustainable development. According to the Commission, the air sector represents approximately 4% of the greenhouse gas emissions of the European Union.
