The Parliament votes for the foreigner of millions of tons of CO2 destined to be stored in marine backgrounds

The Minister of Industry, Marc Ferracci, defended this measure that “to give our heavy industry, the possibility of producing in France, without restrictions in the atmosphere the carbon that inevitably produces.”

Parliament validated a bill that opened the door to the foreigner of millions of tons of CO2 on Tuesday, destined to be stored in the seabed, the government saw “a tool” to reach carbon neutrality in 2050.

The National Assembly has definitely adopted this text in 261 votes (from the central block to the national rally) against 107 votes, essentially from the left of the hemicle, which denounces “a forward flight” not to reduce CO2 emissions. In the heart of the debates: the future of the CO2 captured in an industrial site then compressed and liquefied, to bury them instead of seeing it rejected in the atmosphere. However, unlike its neighbors, such as Norway or Denmark, France does not have a storage site.

The London protocol, an international text on the prevention of pollution, establishes a prohibition of the principle of any export of waste for its elimination in the sea and, therefore, of its burial. This bill, also adopted in the Senate, intends to modify it and allow this export.

“Carbon capture will not replace the effort of decarbonation”

For the Minister of Industry and Energy, Marc Ferracci, it is about “giving our heavy industry, the possibility of producing in France, unifying in the atmosphere the carbon that inevitably produces.” Because, according to him, certain industrial sectors, such as the steel industry, cement production or lime, “will always emit CO2, even without fossil energy.” A “fatal” CO2, but “that we can capture,” the minister argued.

“Carbon capture will not replace the decarbonation effort,” he tried to reassure. According to him, it is “in reverse one of the essential tools to achieve our objectives” of carbon neutrality. It must represent between 8 and 13% of the effort to reduce emissions by 2050, in France as in Europe, he cited.

But for environmentalists and rebels, it is a “new technological leakage forward” to avoid attacking the source of the climate disaster “, in the words of Deputy Lfi Nathalie Oziol. For the communist deputy director Édouard Bénard” that hides the dust under the carpet or carne under the ocean of the ocean of the steps. Intergovernmental experts on the evolution of the climate (IPCC).
