Given the threats of the customs tasks shown by the Trump administration, the French Minister of the Economy, Éric Lombard believes in an agreement that in particular could make discussions on energy imports in Europe in the United States.
From his return to the White House in January, the US president, Donald Trump, has made customs duties one of the essential points of his policy. The Head of State has erected a wall of new taxes on products that enter their country, before reversing in part and imposing a 90 -day break, which must end on July 9.
Gas as lever
As part of the negotiations between the EU and Washington, “there may be discussions about energy, especially about liquefied natural gas (LNG, editor’s note),” said Eric Lombard.
The latter also requested firmness against Washington. “The first response measures of 22 billion euros in imports from the United States are pending. We are working with the European Commission in a second much broader package,” he said. “The ideal would be to find an agreement without having to establish that answer.”
No inflation linked to Iran
The minister also said he was not afraid of an inflation impulse caused by the conflict between Israel and Iran. The disturbances in the Iranian crude supply would increase oil prices.
Finally, he said he was in favor of renewable energies in a context of climate change. “I hope at the same time that we are going to stop the political rholing in renewable energy,” he said. “In the world of Decarbon of the future, where we will guarantee our energy independence, these two sources, nuclear and renewable will need and support their sectors that provide tens of thousands of jobs in our territories.”
