The Nuclear Energy Plant of Gipfech (Tarn-ET-GARONNE) announced on Monday that it had put its reactor 1 on Sunday night, the only current active, due to the increase in temperature in neighboring Garonne linked to the current warm climate.
“The climatic conditions of recent days have led to a great increase in the temperature of the Garonne, which is expected to reach 28 ° C on Monday, June 30, 2025,” EDF said in a statement.
Reactor 2 has already stopped for maintenance
“To comply with the regulations (…), in anticipation, the Production Unit No. 1 of the EDF Nuclear Energy Plant in Gipf was established on Sunday, June 29, 2025 at 11:37 pm,” continues the operator that specifies that the reactor 2 is also currently “at the maintenance stop.”
The Gaphreth power plant carries water from the Garonia to guarantee in particular the cooling of its production units before returning it “largely to the river at a slightly higher temperature (+ 0.2 ° C on average),” explains EDF again on the central site, a device that, therefore, must be placed in suspense, through a stop of the site of the site, in the event of a temperature too high of the river.
