Ten additional years: the nuclear safety authority approves the extension of 20 reactors

These 20 reactors with a power of 1,300 MW will be able to operate ten additional years after their fourth periodic review.

The Nuclear and Radiation Protection Authority gave the green light to the ten -year extension of the 20 French reactors of 1,300 MW, the oldest of which will be 40 years from next year, he announced on Thursday.

“The ASNR considers that all the provisions provided by EDF and those that prescribe open the perspective of a continuation of the operation of these reactors during the ten years after their fourth periodic review,” he explains in an information note dated July 1. The work will be extended to 2040 for the last reactors, specifies.

This decision closes the “generic” phase of the review, which refers to the studies and modifications of the facilities common to all 1,300 MW reactors, designed in a similar model, specifies the ANSR.

The Paluel Premier reactor

The first decaying visits beyond the 40 years of these reactors begin next year. The first reactor in question is that of Paluel (Sena-Et-Marítimo) in early 2026, EDF stressed. This fourth periodic review is of particular importance since it had been retained, during the design of certain reactor materials, a 40 -year hypothesis, explains the ASR.

The reactor will be available for ASNR prescriptions by reactor, during its fourth periodic review, adds authority. “Then the peculiarities of each of the facilities will be taken into account” and the RE -Examin report of each reactor “will be subject to public investigation.” ASNR’s decision follows a consultation initiated in January and ended on June 30 on the safety conditions of the operation of the operation by EDF of these 20 reactors of 1,300 MW.
