The Soccer World Cup in autumn, a blessing for home delivery

With the winter weather, the French should favor “party nights at home” in bars and restaurants, anticipates NPD Group.

The soccer World Cup, a traditional moment of conviviality that fills cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants, could be more favorable for home delivery than table-top catering this year, due to wintry weather, an expert says of the industry.

Thus, “in cold weather and given the economic situation”, with galloping inflation, “it is likely that spectators will opt for a covered and festive evening at home, to be able to gather in large numbers, limiting the expenses related to drinks”. , predicts the firm specialized in catering, making “the happiness of catering delivered”.

The market share doubled during the 2018 edition

Since the last World Cup in 2018, the market share of home delivery has already doubled, from 3% to 6% of commercial catering visits in September 2022, specifies NPD. Because this year “if the matches broadcast during the day favor the frequentation of cafeterias, bars and pubs, because these places allow you to consume standing up, facing the screen”, “at nightfall, the largest groups, which ‘usually are sitting around a meal’ on the terrace, it may be difficult for you to settle inside,’ he continues.

Tabletop catering, “served in the dining room at this time of year” is also “less compatible with game schedules, which are mostly broadcast during the day,” NPD notes. “Football evenings at home are likely to weigh on attendance this year”, while during the previous 2018 World Cup, “marked by France’s victory”, “attendance at bars, cafes and even certain beer halls, had increased in power, in tune with the performance of the Blues”, recalls NPD Group: night consumption had gone from 7% to 10% of visits and 12% of spending in June-July 2018.

Also this year “the big unknown remains the boycott of the matches that some cities and fans have already announced: its scale can have a considerable effect,” concludes Maria Bertoch, an expert from the NPD Group.
