Japan has never attracted so many foreign tourists. Taking advantage of the low value of Yen in particular, 36.9 million visitors went to the country in 2024, an absolute record and a growth of 47.1 % more for a year. And the number of foreign tourists has multiplied by five between 2012 and 2020.
However, this madness poses problems to the authorities and residents who wonder about the harmful effects of this tourist wave.
The authorities are increasing the countermeasures to channel these flows that sometimes surprise visitors, not always respectful of quite strict customs in Japan, the country.
Therefore, the country has doubled the tax to rise to the top of Mount Fuji. The city of Kyoto announced in January a mass increase in its tourist tax, graduated according to the price of accommodation, to promote “sustainable tourism.”
64 Free Aasible Destinations
But there are also incentive measures. Jal’s government and airline (Japan Airlines) announce that free tickets (back and alone) will be offered for interior flights to tourists.
Objective, encourage visitors to go to less congested places, less known as Sapporo, or Naha, on the southern island of Okinawa. In total, 64 destinations are offered.
Be careful, however, you must anticipate a bit to take advantage of it. Tourists will have to reserve their international flight with the JAL company and buy the free interior trip with the same reservation. A single free flight by traveler is possible.
And French tourists will not be able to take advantage of it since this offer is currently reserved for tourists from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, China, Taiwan and the Philippines. But Jal announces that he wants to extend this list.
