The former European Commissioner in the Internal Market Thierry Breton does not have the tongue in his pocket. Consider in the BFMTV antenna that it is necessary to “change the equipment” on the negotiations of the European Union with the Trump administration on customs duties.
“He makes the balance of power and if he is in front of him, he has an entity that spends his time going to bed so as not to give the feeling of wanting confrontation, he continues.”
To deal with the Trump administration, “it is time for us (the European Union) to do politics and, therefore, we balance the power relations with Donald Trump and then we will find an agreement.”
Take an example in the United Kingdom
It was the European Commission that was ordered by the Member States to carry out negotiations against the Trump administration, so that European interests brought one voice. “We weigh more at the age of 27,” recalls Thierry Breton, but that is not enough, according to him.
He ordered the European Union, who is still trying to find an agreement with the United States so as not to submit to customs duties of 30% of August 1 to send political emissaries to negotiate.
Thierry Breton cites as an example the United Kingdom strategy, which sent Washington a policy team to negotiate and ended up winning a commercial agreement.
Recession risks
With more than 1,500 billion exchanges per year with the United States, the European Union is the main commercial partner in the United States. 30% of customs tasks would have consequences for all Member States.
Germany would be affected first, according to Thierry Breton, because 23% of its exports are intended for the United States. Italy would appear in the second position. France would be less affected, but the effects could feel quickly in the economic health of France, which in parallel must achieve almost 44 billion savings in 2026.
