Tensions are decreased between the EU and the American Corning Group, specialized in the manufacture of glass and mobile mobile protection tables. The European Commission had opened an investigation last November fearing that the company abused its dominant and distorted competence at the end of the exclusive supply agreements with telephone manufacturers and glass processing companies.
“Corning has pledged to stop any behavior that can prevent their rivals from exercising effective competition in the coverage glass market used on smartphones and other portable devices,” said Teresa Ribera, executive vice president of the European Commission, in charge of the competition, cited in a statement.
No more exclusive clauses
The commitments, which are now legally binding, include the promise of giving up all exclusivity clauses with telephone manufacturers and occupied glass processing companies.
Corning, which counts for customers in particular Apple, will not require telephone manufacturers to buy a specific amount of their glass, which is sold mainly under the “Gorilla Glass” brand, and “will not condition any price advantage” to provide requirements in the 30 countries of the European economic area.
The Commission said that these commitments, which will remain in force for nine years, “respond to their concerns in matters of competence.” In the event that Corning does not respect them, runs the risk of a fine of up to 10% of their annual turnover.
