Sports betting: the director of the National Gaming Authority wants to “frame advertising pressure”

72% of people who bet online are under 35 years of age and almost 50% are between 18 and 25 years of age.

The World Cup, which opens on Sunday in Qatar, will attract a lot of online betting. According to the forecasts of the National Gaming Authority (ANJ), French players should bet between 500 and 600 million euros during this competition.

Guest on set of BFM businessthe president of the ANJ, Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, warned about the risks that surround these games of chance online.

72% of players are under 35 years of age.

Especially important risks for young audiences. According to figures from Public Health France, 72% of people who practice sports betting online are under 35 years of age. 40% are between 18 and 25 years old.

But “the current economic climate means that there are many young people who find themselves in a situation of significant precariousness”, underlines Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin. The idea of being able to win money with sports betting then becomes especially attractive and leads to spirals of debt and addiction.

Given this, the head of the regulatory authority fears in particular to see the same “media and advertising surge” that was deployed during Euro 2020, “targeted mainly at young people and in particular at young people from popular neighborhoods.”

responsible advertising

For this, the ANJ has the responsibility of the advertisers of the sector. “We signed a series of statutes last week with the entire online gaming advertising ecosystem to moderate the advertising action of gambling operators,” explained the head of the regulator.

In particular, online gambling operators are asked to only include players under the age of 25, with the exception of athletes, in their advertisements. The regulator also asks them to limit the number of ads aired each day and not to work with underage influencers, or influencers whose underage audience is too large.
