Announced with a big fanfare and then stopped, the customs duties that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, presents incorrectly, since “reciprocal” should go into force on August 1, with an expected impact, in the medium term in the prices of a wide range of products.
For almost all economists, there is no doubt that American consumers will have to buy more their favorite products in the coming months. As with these five products.
• Game consoles
The second quarter had marked an essential period for the Japanese manufacturer Nintendo, who announced on April 2 the launch of his Switch 2 console, the day of President Trump’s announcement about his surcharges.
If the launch in early June was held during the 90 -day break announced following customs tasks, its entry into force on August 1 could mean an increase in console prices, largely manufactured in Vietnam, a country that accepted, in a commercial agreement, the application of a 20% surcharge in its products by Washington. Sold for $ 450, the console could increase from $ 75 to 100 according to several estimates.
Its Japanese Sony competitor has already increased the prices of its PS5 console, following the ads on April 2, and could try to start again, as well as Microsoft with its Xbox series.
• Clothing and shoes
The vast majority of clothing and shoes sold in the United States are not made on the site, but come, as in Europe, Vietnam, Bangladesh or, increasingly, from African countries such as Kenya or Lesotho. So many countries that will see their recharged properties on August 1.
In addition to the Vietnamese case, Bangladesh products are currently concerned about a 35% surcharge, which Dacca expects to put between 15 and 20% before their entry into force, according to the local press. As for Lesotho, the clash could be harder: except change, their products must face 50% of customs duties.
According to the American Clothing and Shoes Association, 20% of imported clothing to the United States comes from Vietnam and 11% of Bangladesh. The Laboratory Budget of the University of YALE estimated that the price of clothing should increase by 37% on average.
• Coffee
Americans are, with much, the largest coffee consumers in the world, in total volume. The vast majority are imported, according to the National Coffee Association. Among the main importing countries: Colombia, Vietnam or Brazil.
The Lus -speaking country is also the objective of one of the strongest customs duties applied to its products, 50%, in retaliation according to Donald Trump in the “witch hunt” of which the former president of the right would be a victim, Jair Bolsonaro, accused of an attempted coup d’etat. Colombia should not experience an increase beyond 10% basic already applied to all products that enter the United States since the beginning of April.
• Waterproof and maintenance products
If many of these products are made in the United States, they are ingredients, a significant part of which it is imported. However, groups do not intend to absorb the additional cost induced by customs tasks.
In any case, this is the CEO’s message of the Procter & Gamble group, which markets the Ariel laundry, the Pampers diapers or the Gillette navigators, among others. During a telephone conference with investors on Tuesday, apart from the publication of the quarterly results of the group, Jon Moeller warned that consumers will observe during the summer an increase in the prices of group products.
• Chocolate
If they are not the greatest consumers in the world, per capita, the United States is the first importers of chocolate, which comes mainly from Ecuador and Ivory Coast, according to data from the United States Ministry of Agriculture.
Almost half, or 47%, cocoa grains imported to the United States come from the country of Western Africa, whose products must be taxed up to 21% from August 1. If industrialists want to resort to cocoa butter, Indonesia or the customs tasks of Malaysia, they will be 19% or 25%.
