Despite “great progress,” Donald Trump maintains his resolution to sanction the countries that trade with Russia

The US president greets constructive discussions with Russia after Steve Witkoff’s visit, but maintains his sanction project towards countries that do business with Russia.

Donald Trump said his social network that the meeting on Wednesday of his special emissary Steve Witkoff with Vladimir Putin had been “very productive” on Wednesday and that “great progress” had been made.

However, a senior American official said that the United States was still planning secondary sanctions on Friday, that is, to guidance countries that are supplied to Russia, in particular oil and armaments.

The Kremlin, meanwhile, called “useful and constructive” discussions in Moscow as “useful and constructive” between the emissary of Donald Trump and the Russian president, two days before the expiration of the American ultimatum with the aim of ending the conflict in Ukraine.

More and more tense relationships

The White House tenant, who had much closer to Vladimir Putin after his return to power in January, now shows a growing frustration against Russia.

The Republican leader has repeatedly promised to end the conflict in Ukraine, caused by the Russian invasion of February 2022, without success until now.

Donald Trump gave Russia until Friday until he stopped hostilities, under the penalty of new sanctions.

These would consist of recharging the products exported by countries that do business with Russia in the United States.

The US president has already signed a decree addressed to India on Wednesday, accusing New Delhi his purchases of Russian oil.

It has specifically increased 50%, instead of 25%, customs tasks in Indian products, which specifies that this new surcharge would only be effective in 21 days.

The text of the decree leaves open the possibility of sanctioning in the same way of other countries they provide in Russian hydrocarbons.
