France’s commercial deficit still was digging in June to reach 7.7 billion euros, especially assigned by manufactured and energy products, Customs said on Thursday, August 7. Already in May, France’s commercial deficit appeared at 7.6 billion.
For the entire first half, the deficit reaches 43 billion euros, a deterioration of 4.4 billion euros compared to the second half of 2024, due to an increase in imports that exceeds that of exports, detailed customs.
Since the entry into force of additional provisional customs tasks in the United States at the beginning of April, which has become effective on Thursday for the products of savings dozens, France exports to the United States “decrease slightly” in the annual change, customs note.
“Possible postponement” of Chinese exports to France
On the other hand, the evolution of exports to the United States “does not allow the moment to identify a manifest effect of customs duties” and customs do not observe a “significant fall” of France exports to the United States compared to the same period in 2024.
This fall in France exports to the United States is also less compared to those observed in its main European partners. And the increase in imports from China, Southeast Asia, Mexico and Canada could translate a “possible postponement to France” and the EU on the part of the exports of these countries, says the press release.
In detail in June, imports increased by 0.4 billion euros to reach 57.6 billion euros. Exports increase by 0.3 billion euros and are 49.9 billion euros. In this month, the excavation of the commercial deficit is explained in particular for a decrease in the energy balance (-0.1 billion euros) due to a slight increase in imports, as well as that of manufactured products (-0.3 billion euros), according to customs.
