If they spent an average budget of 30 euros in 2021 according to a Kantar study, the French who want to get a Christmas tree this year will undoubtedly have to spend more. Inflation forces, its price should increase between 5 and 10% on average, according to professionals.
An increase that, however, remains contained in relation to the very high production costs of resellers: “All our products consumed in terms of packaging, transport, have increased very significantly. Wooden packaging has increased by between 30 and 50% in the space of a year, so the impact is significant on trees that are bulky to transport”, explains Frédéric Naudat, president of the French Association of the natural Christmas tree.
“All materials increased”
For his part, Melchior de Valbray, a nurseryman from Ollioules (Var), says he is experiencing a general increase in purchases of “10 to 15%”. With France Bleu, Didier Pasquet, director of the Samco cooperative in Morvan, evokes an outbreak of “between 15 and 20%”. “All the materials have increased, there are plastic films to wrap the trees, the trunks that serve as the foot of the trees. Everything has taken almost 20% ”, he laments.
If sellers have to take advantage of these very high costs, some still promise stability in the price of trees: “We are cutting our margin and we are trying to save volumes”, underlines Nicolas Baillie, owner of the Pessicart garden. center in Nice.
Melchior de Valbray makes the same promise: “We absolutely wanted to keep the price to the customer, which will therefore be the same as last year and the year before,” he says. Still, not all sellers can afford it.
