Finally, the customs duties imposed by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, in international commercial partners, so far they have not assigned maritime traffic on the Panama Canal, said its administrator on Thursday, August 14.
The analysts had predicted a slowdown in the circulation of commercial ships in the Panama Canal, for which around 5% of global maritime traffic traffic, due to the commercial offensive of the entire American manager. But “the results of this fiscal year will agree with what we have predicted” in terms of rotation and load, said administrator Ricaurte Vásquez to the AFP.
The Panama Canal Authority anticipates a record turnover of $ 5.6 billion for the current fiscal year until September 30, 12.7% more compared to the previous period. It also predicts the approval of a total of 13,900 ships throughout the channel during the fiscal year, or 520 million tons of load.
Towards a drop in the load volume
Ricaurte Vásquez, however, believes “probably” that over time, the volume of charges decreases due to US customs tasks.
The Panama Canal, about 80 kilometers long, allows it to move from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean without ignoring South America, which gives China, Japan or even a south Korea a better access to the east coast of the United States to trade.
Since he came to power in January, the Trump government has placed the channel at the top of its strategic agenda, particularly to counteract Chinese interests in this Latin American area that the United States tends to consider its sphere of influence.
