The price of school supplies is decreasing this year for students entering the University, the Familles de France association on the basis of an annual barometer reported on Monday, welcoming a “more stable” economic context. “In 2025, the average basket amounts to 211.10 euros, against 223.46 euros in 2024”, summarizes Familles de France, for whom “this represents a fall of 12.36 euros, or -5.53 % compared to last year.”
This barometer, produced for forty years, is carried out by evaluating the average cost of a school supplies basket requested from a student who enters the sixth grade. “For the first time in several years, all physical distribution circuits record a price drop,” specifies the association, pointing out a decrease in hypermarkets (-8.09%) and supermarkets (-2.98%) as in specialized stores (-4.75%) and online (-3.82%).
Anticipation and search for promotions
While the decrease was the most marked in 2024 for stationery, this year are the sporting articles that registered the strongest decrease (-8.59%). But all categories are decreasing. “This improvement is explained by a more stable economic context: inflation contained around 1%, the fall in energy and transport costs, relaxation in raw materials (paper, plastics),” explains the association.
But this decrease in the paid quantity “also reflects an evolution of purchase behavior: anticipation, comparison, search for promotions and waste reduction,” France continues.
This barometer is published on the eve of the payment by the CAF of the assignment after school. This, which benefits about three million homes, is intended for the most modest families whose children are 6 to 18 years old. It represents about 450 euros with some variations depending on age. This assignment “remains an essential help to support the schooling of 5 million children,” insists France’s families.
