New TGV line between Montpellier and Perpignan: after 20 years of procrastination, work will finally begin

This project launched less than 20 years ago will materialize from 2029 for a planned commissioning in 2040. Its cost is estimated at 6.2 billion euros for 150 kilometers of new tracks.

It is one of the latest main TGV projects. The first works to link Montpellier to Perpignan through a new high -speed track should begin in 2029, with a first phase between Montpellier and Béziers (52 kilometers) that should end in 2034. The start -up of the complete line is established in 2040.

As France 3 recalls, the Occitanie, the project launched 20 years ago has been based on several points among residents, environmental defense associations and the SNCF network, including the integration of the new Poussan viaduct, almost 1.5 kilometers long and built at 30 meters high.

A great consultation made it possible to lead to a consensus to better integrate work into the landscape.

“It must be sure of the future of the project, which stands out as an essential response to the needs of the territory, the saturation situation of the existing line, the necessary resistance of the rail network, as well as the European link needs with Spain.”

Total cost of 6,200 million euros

With this green light for the first phase of work, a new sequence of negotiations will open next year for phase two between Béziers and Perpignan (98 kilometers of new clues, two new stations). This road will connect to the line that serves Barcelona in Spain, which reduces travel time to the Catalan city.

The total cost of this new line of 150 kilometers is estimated at 6.2 billion euros. It is attended by the State, local communities and the European Union.

Remember that, still in southern France, work began to build a high -speed line between Bordeaux and Toulouse. The objective is a launch in 2032.

It is one of the largest transport infrastructure projects in France, with a total investment of 14 billion euros, funded by the State (40%), local authorities (40%) and the European Union (20%), for 418 kilometers of new lines.

Ultimately, thanks to this new section, Paris and Toulouse will be connected at 3:10 am, an hour less than today.
