Germany has lost almost 250,000 industrial jobs since 2019, especially in automotive construction

The number of people employed in the industry in Germany fell 4.3% in six years, with about 245,500 jobs since 2019 according to a study by EY.

The deceleration in the German industry is accelerating, with almost 250,000 jobs eliminated in the sector since 2019, according to a study published on Tuesday, August 26 by the EY firm.

German industrial companies generated a turnover of more than 533 billion euros in the second quarter of 2025, 2.1% less than for a year, Ey emphasizes, who cites data from the federal statistics office. This fall follows the 0.2% decrease recorded in the first quarter. The number of people used in the German industrial sector decreased by 2.1% in the second quarter to 5.43 million and 4.3% reported that six years ago, with about 245,500 lost jobs since 2019, according to EY.

Particularly affected car manufacturers

The highest fall in the works was observed in automotive construction, 6.7% less in the second quarter. In absolute terms, this represents around 51,500 lost jobs in a year. German cars manufacturers face a strong competition from their Asian rivals, an expensive transition to Electric and up in US customs tasks. Some of the large companies in the sector in Germany, such as Volkswagen, Mercedes and the provider of continental teams, are among the companies that eliminate jobs.

Although the United States remains the most important foreign market for German industrial products, exports to this country fell 10% in the second quarter, while exports to China have decreased by 14%, they show data. Things should not improve with the customs tasks of 15%, established by Donald Trump against the countries of the European Union, which include cars.
