The interprofession of the eggs (CNPO) denounced on Thursday the import of some distributors of hundreds of thousands of Ukraine eggs “that do not respect European production standards and that may contain antibiotics” prohibited, and required “reinforced” compliance controls.
Since spring, several Ukraine eggs have been identified with a 3 code -separation of a cage farm, in different supermarkets, including Carrefour and E. Leclerc brands. Given the increase in egg consumption, privileged animal protein during the inflation period, tensions in stocks have arisen since the beginning of the year and certain rays have been emptied, sometimes under the effect of precautionary purchases by concerned consumers.
“Sales increased by 5% in volume this year (at the end of July) compared to 2024, or about 350 million eggs more compared to the 7 billion last year. We could respond and provide mass distribution,” said the AFP Yves-Marie Beaudet, president of CNPO.
The president of the CNPO acknowledges that 300,000 eggs recently imported according to him by E. Leclerc represent only a very small amount, but “perhaps it is an attempt” destined to obtain at a lower cost.
Ovosex
This last one denounces a double distribution speech, whose federations left the interprofession of the eggs at the beginning of the summer. According to him, the brands ask producers to reduce the proportion of cage chickens, which requires buildings transformations, or even refuse to the 3 market code, but “they allow them to import it.”
Ukraine eggs do not respect, according to the CNPO, the European regulation on cage agriculture (especially on density), or the French sector agreement on the ovosex that makes it possible to avoid grinding, now prohibited, male chicks when detecting sex in the egg using expensive technology, or standards in antibiotics.
The alert system that informs the problems related to Agrifood products in the European Union (Rasff) identified four controls in July and August, having revealed the presence of prohibited antibiotics in Ukraine eggs. Emphasizing the “significant health risk”, the CNPO asks the authorities to strengthen controls and demand a great distribution to “an emergency meeting” to “remedy this situation of unfair competition.”
