A new setback for Naval Group: Norway will buy British frigates instead of French

Already dismissed a few days ago from a mega-control for submarines in Canada, Norway was not retained by the French naval group for the supply of its future frigas. Oslo preferred the British offer.

Norway has preserved the British offer for the supply of its future frigates, a new setback for the French Naval Group, already excluded a few days ago from a mega contract for submarines in Canada. “Norway will buy British frigates for our defense” as part of a strategic association with the United Kingdom, Norwegian prime minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, announced during a press conference in Oslo.

In addition to the United Kingdom with type 26 frigates built by BAE Systems and France with the Naval Group, Germany and the United States intervention frigates (FDI), Germany and the United States was in the supply of five or six ships, an estimated contract of more than 100 billion crowns (8.5 billion euros). British models, criticized by some in Norway because they contain Israeli components, and the French were considered in advance as favorites.

Delivered from 2030

Both French president Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Friedrich Merz have visited Norway in recent months and praised their respective offers.

A NATO member country, Norway, shares a maritime border in the Bante Mar with Russia, which operates in the region the powerful fleet of the north. Identical to those provided to the Royal Navy, type 26 frigates will be delivered, which have the capacity to combat submarines, the Norwegian Navy since 2030.

This election, which must still be ratified by the Norwegian Parliament, constitutes a new disappointment for Naval Group, already excluded last week by Canada by a twelve submarine contract. This contract will be played between the marine systems of Thyssenkrupp (TKM) Germans and the Hanwha Ocean of South Korea.
