Donald Trump hopes to seal Tiktok’s fate with Xi Jinping on Friday

Chinese and American presidents have resumed negotiations on customs duties and Tiktok activities in the United States, with the aim of deactivating tensions between the two countries.

Donald Trump, who recently accused Xi Jinping to “conspire” against the United States, hopes to finish Tiktok’s fate and advance commercial negotiations during an interview on Friday, September 19 with his Chinese counterpart.

“I speak with President XI on Friday, about Tiktok and also trade. And we are very close to the agreements of all this. And my relationship with China is very good,” said the US president on Thursday in an interview with the Fox news channel.

This is the second telephone interview between the two men since the inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, and the third since the beginning of the year, including a call dated January 17.

An agreement reached with Beijing on Tiktok

During his June 5 conversation, the US President said he was invited to China for his counterpart and announced that he had invited the Chinese president to come to the United States. These projects have not materialized, but several analysts expect Xi Jinping to reiterate their invitation to Donald Trump, notoriously very sensitive to diplomatic honors.

“Each of the two leaders will seek to demonstrate that it was smarter than the other” in commercial negotiations, predicts that Ali Wyne, an analyst specialized in relations but American of the International Center for Reflections of the crisis group, in a note.

The destination in the United States of the popular Tiktok video platform, owned by Bytedance Chino, can “end” during Friday’s exchange, Donald Trump also said during a press conference with British prime minister Keir Starmer.

The US president had already announced on Tuesday, without many details, which had reached an agreement with Beijing for the resumption of American activities of Tiktok by US investors. The Wall Street Journal talked about a consortium that includes the Oracle technological giant and California’s investment Funds by Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz.

The prohibition of Tiktok rejected

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has once again rejected the entry into force of the prohibition of the platform in the United States, initially planned in January by a Congress Law.

This prohibition, in the name of national security, had been decided during the mandate of his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden. Donald Trump believes that Tiktok helped him boost his popularity among young Americans during the last presidential campaign.

This call comes when Beijing and Washington are trying to find an agreement on customs tasks. A demonstration of Xi Jinping’s diplomatic force also continues, which organized a great summit in China in China in early September with, among other things, Russian and Indian leaders.

Piique to the heart for the complicity shown by the Chinese president and Vladimir Putin, as well as by the North Korean leader, Kim Jong One, during a large military parade in Beijing, Donald Trump had accused Xi Jinping of “conspiracy” against the United States with his guests.

Commercial tensions between the United States and China

The US president has also repeatedly asked European countries to sanction China for their purchases of Russian oil.

“If they did this, I think the war (in Ukraine) could stop,” said Fox News on Thursday. Donald Trump imposed tasks of punitive customs to India due to his purchases of black gold from Moscow, but did not take the same measure against China.

Commercial tensions between Beijing and Washington experienced ups and downs in 2025. During the year, customs tariffs between the United States and China have reached three times higher levels on both sides, which disturbs supply chains.

Since then, Washington and Beijing have concluded an agreement to calm tensions, temporarily reduce 30% customs tariffs for Chinese products imported to the United States and 10% for American goods imported to China. This commercial truce must last until November 10.
