“In the end, it will weigh on purchasing power”: for Medef, “we should not touch” the pension reform

Patrick Martin, leader of the first employers’ organization, refuses to back down on pension reform.

Medef opposes the suspension of the pension reform demanded by the Socialist Party. “We are very reluctant to suspend this reform,” declared Patrick Martin, leader of the first employers’ organization, on France Inter, this Thursday, October 9.

“If we buy stability at the price of a considerable increase in the country’s debt and the questioning of growth and purchasing power, I say ‘no’. We must not touch this reform that was not requested by businessmen, but which is fair,” insisted Patrick Martin, while the suspension of this reform was proposed by Élisabeth Borne, resigning minister, to respond to the expectations of the PS.

“Businessmen see very well that if this reform is suspended, it will weigh even more on the level of activity, on the conditions of indebtedness and, in the end – there is no need to make a fuss – it will weigh on purchasing power,” estimates the head of Medef, who “calls all political parties to reason.”

“Democratic wound”

The resigned Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, assured this Wednesday afternoon on France 2 that the suspension of the pension reform, requested by much of the leftIt would cost “at least three billion euros” in 2027.

Sébastien Lecornu, however, indicated that it would be necessary to “find a way for the debate on pension reform to take place.” “This debate will take place in the presidential elections.”

“We cannot be in demographic denial. (…) But we still have to turn a deaf ear so as not to hear that there are French people who say ‘there is a democratic wound,'” added the resigning prime minister.
