“The most powerful strategic nuclear weapons system”: for the military parade of the 80th anniversary of the one-party state, North Korea displays the new Hwasong-21 intercontinental ballistic missile

North Korea organized a military parade in Pyongyang on the afternoon of Friday, October 10, in the presence of foreign dignitaries, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party, state media reported this Saturday.

North Korea hosted a military parade in Pyongyang on Friday night, displaying its intercontinental missiles in the presence of foreign dignitaries to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party, state media reported on Saturday.

“A grand military parade was held in Kim Il Sung Square on October 10 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea,” the official KCNA news agency said. Among the weapons on display during this parade were the new Hwasong-21 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), described by KCNA as “the most powerful strategic nuclear weapons system”, other missiles of all types and even drone launch vehicles.

Images broadcast by KCNA showed a series of long missiles parading on vehicles, at night and in light rain, in front of a large crowd waving North Korean flags.

The “invincible” North Korean army “has always redoubled its efforts to help our party overcome difficulties and accelerate the arrival of a bright future,” said leader Kim Jong Un in his speech, who attended the parade in the company of Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang and former Russian president Dmitri Medvedev, current vice president of his country’s security council.

“It is crucial to see this parade not as an isolated event, but as the culmination of a deliberate structural change in regional geopolitics,” Seong-Hyon Lee, a researcher at Harvard University in the United States, told AFP. “It serves as a clear warning that the strengthening of the Seoul-Washington alliance will be met with a consolidated and powerful trilateral bloc on its doorstep,” he added.

Among the guests was also the leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam.

“Ideological perfection”

In his speech, Kim Jong Un paid tribute to North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces in their war against Ukraine.

According to Seoul, around 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed and thousands more wounded since they were sent into combat, in particular to recapture Russia’s Kursk region, conquered by Ukraine in the summer of 2024. Pyongyang also supplies Russia with weapons and ammunition, according to South Korea, which suspects Moscow of transferring sensitive military technologies to its ally in return.

Kim Jong Un himself attended on September 3, along with Chinese presidents Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, a gigantic military parade in Beijing to celebrate the victory against Japan and the end of World War II 80 years ago.

Russia and North Korea have strengthened ties since the start of the war in Ukraine and signed a mutual defense pact. China remains the main ally of North Korea, sanctioned by the United Nations for its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program.
