Food prices have increased “more than 20% between 2021 and 2023”: the Senate will launch a commission of inquiry into the margins of mass distribution

At the initiative of elected environmentalists, a senatorial commission of inquiry will examine the margins of mass distribution, with the aim of “highlighting the lack of transparency.”

The Senate is preparing to launch a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the margins of mass distribution, at the initiative of environmentalists who announced on Friday that they wanted to shed light on the “lack of transparency” in the sector.

“As the French face an explosion in the cost of living and farmers do not see their income increase, this situation fuels a feeling of injustice,” says the Senate environmental group in a press release, noting that food prices have seen their prices rise “more than 20% between 2021 and 2023.”

Six months to hold hearings

The commission of inquiry was requested by Parisian senator Antoinette Guhl, through a “right of draw”, a procedure that allows each parliamentary group to obtain the creation of a parliamentary mission of its choice each year. This commission, with expanded investigative powers, has yet to be formally constituted by the Senate. You will then have six months to hold your hearings before submitting a report.

In recent years, the Senate has increased the number of investigative commissions with significant impact on the public sphere, from the Benalla affair to the Marianne Fund, passing through the growing influence of consulting companies in public policies. Or, more recently, about TotalEnergies’ compliance with climate obligations, the cost of public aid to companies, that of state agencies or even the bottled mineral water scandal.
