This is a new vote against the government’s advice. MEPs largely rejected on Saturday the freezing of the income tax scale, which would have meant that 200,000 more households would have to pay this tax, depriving the draft 2026 budget of revenue of €2 billion.
A broad coalition of deputies that brings together the extreme right, the right, the macronists and the insoumis, approved an amendment by Laurent Wauquiez, head of the LR deputies, which proposes indexing the income tax scale to inflation estimated at 1.1%.
The amendment was adopted against the advice of the Minister of Public Accounts, Amélie de Montchalin, within the framework of the first reading examination of the revenue part of the state budget.
Similar amendments had been presented by RN, LFI and the deputy of the centrist Liot group, Christophe Naegelen.
Other amendments coming from the left, but also from the Renaissance deputy Jean-René Cazeneuve or the Liot deputy, Charles de Courson, proposed revaluing only the lowest sections of the scale, wishing to reconcile the imperative of restoring public finances and tax justice.
The lowest bidder, that of Charles de Courson, only referred to the first section and would have avoided incorporating new homes into the IR, with an estimated cost of 700 million euros, Amélie de Montchalin stressed.
“In our country, which is the European champion of millionaires, which is the European champion of dividend payments, where the 500 fortunes have doubled their assets since Emmanuel Macron is in charge, we prefer to ask those who work every day to pay more, than those who earn money while they sleep,” argued Insoumis Damien Maudet.
