Employees at branches of foreign companies in Portugal earned an average of 42.7% more than those at national companies in 2021, up to 1,518 euros, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) released this Tuesday.
Over the same period, apparent labor productivity (measured by the gross value added generated by each unit of work force) was 69.7% higher than that observed in national companies, reaching 47,507 euros.
In 2021, there were 9,706 branches of foreign companies in Portugal (1.8% more than in 2020).
In 2021, foreign branches employed about 585 thousand people, representing 17.7% of the total number of employees in non-financial enterprises. Each site employed an average of 60 people in 2021, much more than national companies (about six people).
Between 2010 and 2021, foreign subsidiaries recorded on average an apparent labor productivity that was 18.3 thousand euros higher than the average of national companies, with the average monthly remuneration always being higher in foreign subsidiaries, an average of 396 euros more than in national associations.
The weight of subsidiaries of foreign companies in gross value added (GVA) went from 21.9% in 2010 to 27.6% in 2021, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points in the past two years.
The turnover of the foreign branches, which represented 24.1% in 2010, reached 27.7% in 2021, with a similar situation observed for the workforce, which represented 13.7% in 2010 and increased to 17.7% in 2021, according to the institute.
After a decline of 6.7% in 2020, the gross value added of the foreign branches in Portugal grew by 14.8% last year, which corresponds to a nominal total of EUR 28 billion.
The gross value added of national companies grew by 16.2% in 2021, after a contraction of 10.4% in the previous year.
Nearly two-thirds (65.1%) of gross value added generated by foreign subsidiaries related to companies owned by entities headquartered in European Union countries.
Large subsidiaries (538 companies) accounted for 64.1% of the total gross value added of foreign subsidiaries, equivalent to €18 billion in nominal terms.
The gross value added of foreign branches with an export profile (43.7% of the total gross value added of foreign branches) grew by 19.8% in 2021, compared to an increase of 11.2% for foreign branches without an export profile, INE adds. at.
Exports of goods from foreign subsidiaries amounted to 24.1 billion euros, which corresponds to 37.9% of the total (1.3 percentage points less than in 2020).
