The eurozone unemployment rate fell to 6.5% in October, compared to 7.3% in the same month of 2021, the European Union’s (EU) statistical office announced on Thursday, a historic low since 2008.
Data released by Eurostat on Thursday shows that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the Eurozone stood at 6.5% in October this year, up from 6.6% in September last year and 7.3% in October 2021.
In the EU as a whole, the EU unemployment rate stood at 6% in October this year, up from 6.1% in September last year and 6.6% in October 2021.
In both cases, according to Eurostat figures, a record minimum value has been at stake since the statistical series, which started in 2008.
In October this year, the unemployment rate in Portugal stood at 6.1%, compared to an identical rate in September and up from 6.3% in October 2021.
In absolute terms, Eurostat estimates that in October 2022, 12.953 million men and women in the EU, of which 10.872 million in the euro area, were unemployed.
Compared to October 2021, unemployment in the same month of this year fell by 1.158 million in the EU and by 1.053 million in the Eurozone.
In terms of youth unemployment, a total of 2.872 million young people under the age of 25 were unemployed in the EU in October this year, of which 2.326 million were in the euro area, a rate of 15.1% for the bloc as a whole and 15% in the single currency area .
By gender, the unemployment rate for women was 6.4% in the EU in October this year, stable compared to the previous month, while the unemployment rate for men stood at 5.7%, up from 5.8% in the previous month.
In the eurozone, the unemployment rate for women stood at 7% in October this year, up from 7.1% in the previous month, while that for men stood at 6.1%, up from 6.2% in the previous month, Eurostat reports.
