BFMTV Survey – Electricity: 6 out of 10 French people intend to reduce their consumption to avoid cuts this winter

According to the new Elabe survey for BFMTV, 60% of the French plan to reduce their electricity consumption in the coming months, especially young people, the working classes and residents of the Paris metropolitan area.

Faced with the risk of power outages this winter, will the French respond to the government’s call for sobriety? According to the new survey “L’Opinion en direct” carried out by Elabe for BFMTV, 60% of them intend to reduce their consumption in the coming days and months.

And for good reason, nearly as many (59%) judge the risk of winter outages as “high.” A situation that also worries half of those surveyed (50%, including 14% “very concerned”), and in particular the working classes (59% concerned), those under 50 (58%) and women (55%).

71% of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 plan to reduce their consumption

In this context, while the vast majority of the French (94%) say they already pay attention to their electricity consumption, 42% still plan to reduce it “a little” and 18% “a lot” in the coming months. Conversely, after 4 probes on 10 (39%), I do not understand how to modify our habits, essentially parce qu’ils consomment déjà the strict minimum (36%), although the remaining 3% dissent and simply do not like it. without desire

However, if the authorities announced the risks of the cuts, two thirds of the French (66%) would make an effort to reduce their consumption “a little” (45%) or even “a lot” (21%).

In general, young people (71% of 18-24 year olds), the working classes (69%) and residents of the Parisian conurbation (71%) are the populations most likely to reduce their electricity consumption this winter, although There are cuts planned. by the authorities or not.

Businesses must do their part

62% of those surveyed say they know what to do specifically to reduce their consumption. Among the most cited actions are changing their conventional light bulbs for LEDs (91%, of which 76% already do it and 15% are willing to do it), favoring the “eco” program or changing the use of the washing machine or dishwasher (89%), turning down the heat (84%) and systematically unplugging appliances on standby (84%).

On the other hand, 3 out of 10 French people (31%) say that they see some gestures that they could do to reduce their consumption but that “it is not very clear” and 6% indicate that they do not know what to do specifically to achieve this.

Although the majority of the French say they are willing to make an effort to limit the risk of power cuts, 27% consider that it is above all companies to make an effort, while 69% believe that companies and individuals should try so hard. Only 4% consider that it is mainly up to individuals to act.

Even so, two thirds of those surveyed (65%) consider that worrying about possible power outages in winter “should not happen in a country like France”. A sentiment especially shared by the voters of Marine Le Pen (82%), the abstentionists (71%) and the voters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon (64%). On the contrary, 34% consider that “as long as it is exceptional, it is not very serious”. A point of view shared by a small majority of Emmanuel Macron’s voters (53%).

According to RTE, the French have already reduced their electricity consumption in recent weeks, with a decrease that was amplified last week, to -8.3% compared to the average of previous years (2014-2019).
