Dafalgan, Efferalgan: there is no shortage of these paracetamol drugs ensures Upsa

But the lab warns that it “will not be able to absorb all the volumes currently out of stock” from other suppliers. An issue that affects pediatric versions of acetaminophen medications.

Avoid panic. This week, the issue of low availability of Doliprane for children in pharmacies was in the headlines as winter illnesses and covid returned with a vengeance, causing demand to skyrocket.

His laboratory, Sanofi, indicated then that “there is no rupture of paracetamol” but a quota sought by the health authorities. However, the product also suffers from difficulties in supplying the active ingredient worldwide, bottle shortages and a social conflict within the company. This amplifies the difficulties in obtaining supplies.

Upsa communicates this Wednesday about its two star products, Dafalgan and Efferalgan, which also contain paracetamol. Objective: “to guarantee their capacities to produce and make their paracetamol-based products available to their customers, pharmacies, wholesalers and hospitals”.

Two months of stock

“As of December 7, 2022, no ruptures or risks of rupture or fears have been observed for the next several weeks with respect to the adult forms of paracetamol under the Dafalgan and Efferalgan references.”

“UPSA daily monitors the status of its stocks -in its factories and in pharmacies- which it regularly shares with the Health Authorities. The monitoring established by UPSA reports two months of stocks available in pharmacies on average, for adult forms of paracetamol,” the laboratory continues.

And remember that “100% of the paracetamol kits are produced in France at its factory in Agen (Lot-et-Garonne). This agility allows you to provide patients and healthcare professionals with continuous access to essential medicines, such as acetaminophen.”

Stress in the pediatric variant

UPSA says that it has reorganized its production lines dedicated to the manufacture of its two references, which are currently operating “24 hours a day, 7 days a week”.

For the pediatric Efferalgan variant, things are a bit different. If the drug benefits from a decided doubling of its production this year, it could be hard to find.

“However, despite the emergency measure taken by Upsa to significantly increase its production, the laboratory indicates, given the importance and suddenness of the current breaks in the references of other operators, that it will not be able to absorb all the volumes currently out of stock. However, it will continue to do everything possible to support the demand,” warns Upsa, indirectly confirming the shortage of Doliprane for children.
