“If we do nothing, we will lose half of the farmers within 10-15 years”, according to Arnaud Gaillot (Young Farmers)

Arnaud Gaillot, President of Young Farmers, was the guest of Good Evening Business on Friday. In particular, he returned to the difficulties facing the profession for the future.

“If we do nothing, we will lose half of the farmers within 10 to 15 years,” warned Arnaud Gaillot, president of Young Farmers (JA), on the set of BFM Business. Faced with this alarming finding, the president of the agrarian union reaffirmed the need to find tools “to limit the loss of farmers as much as possible.”

To achieve this, Arnaud Gaillot considers that “the promotion of the agricultural trade in institutes and wherever we can attract young people” is the first provision to implement. “They are exciting, diversified professions that can be practiced in the animal or plant world, with various means of production,” he justified.

The president of the JA also recalled that the difficulty of the profession had decreased thanks to mechanization and the means of innovation. “It is a job that is still complicated”, he admitted, before continuing: “when you take care of animals, it is every day of the year, 24 hours a day”.

A living wage for farmers

Working together in a company with associates, resorting to salaried work or a replacement service on weekends… However, Arnaud Gaillot recalled that certain options today allow farmers to lighten their working time a little.

Finally, he highlighted the need to restore decent remuneration for these professionals. “The companies that process, the GMS (large and medium-sized surfaces, editor’s note) must pay the price so that tomorrow the farmers are still there,” he said. Finally, he recalled that consumers also had an important role in agreeing to “pay a few cents more” and “buy French”.

A wish shared by Emmanuel Macron who went to Loiret this Friday to offer young farmers “a pact for renewal and a future for agriculture”. On the occasion of this trip, the President of the Republic called for “French consumption” to defend in particular “agrarian and food sovereignty”.

It has also announced that a “living fund for entrepreneurs” will be “endowed with 400 million euros” to help “young people to settle down, to ease the burden for several years and to carry out the essential transformations” to adapt to the ecological transition.
