The US Department of Energy, along with scientists, has confirmed that experimental nuclear fusion has produced a “net energy gain” for the first time, paving the way for the commercialization of carbon-free energy for years to come.
US scientists announced Tuesday that they had made a “scientific breakthrough” in the field of nuclear fusion, which could one day revolutionize energy production on Earth.
An experiment carried out last week “produced more energy from the fusion than the energy from the lasers used” to cause the reaction, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), which reports to the US Department of Energy, explained in a tweet.
