The downward trend in electricity consumption continues in France despite the cold. According to the latest data published by RTE, French electricity consumption fell by 9.7% last week compared to the average for previous years, excluding the health crisis (2014-2019) in the same period. The previous week, electricity consumption had fallen in similar proportions (-9.6%).
These figures confirm “the real effect of the sobriety measures adopted by individuals and companies”, although last week “temperatures were significantly below normal for the season”, unlike previous weeks in which milder temperatures “They reduced the need for electricity for heating,” underlines the manager of France’s electricity transmission network in his weekly summary.
All sectors affected
If at the beginning of autumn the drop in electricity consumption was concentrated mainly in industry, now it affects all sectors. “Last week, the aggregate consumption of the residential and tertiary sectors was around 8.5% lower than in 2021,” specifies RTE. The government’s sobriety plan contemplates a 10% reduction in energy consumption over the next two years compared to 2019.
In a context of energy crisis, RTE has launched this weekly monitoring of electricity consumption. Please note: published data is in line with normal temperatures for the period in question. More specifically, consumption is calculated from a reference temperature, in order to observe structural variations from one year to the next, beyond meteorological effects, such as abnormally warmer or colder weather.
