The minimum wage will mechanically rise 1.8% on January 1

The minimum wage will increase by 24 euros net per month from next January.

The minimum wage will be increased. With the confirmation of the inflation figures for more than one year in November published this Thursday by INSEE, the Smic will gain 1.8% on January 1, 2023.

This mechanical revaluation will mean a monthly increase of 24.93 euros net, thus increasing the minimum wage from 1,329.05 to 1,352.97 euros net. Gross, the reference salary will increase to 1,709 euros from 2023 and its hourly rate will reach 11.27 euros. The government must formalize this increase during the day.

The Smic benefits each year from a mechanical increase on January 1 that takes into account the weighted increase in prices for the 20% of households with the lowest income.

Two exceptional climbs this year

There are also revaluations during the year as soon as inflation exceeds 2%, which has caused two exceptional increases this year (2.6% on May 1 and 2% on August 1) after the automatic 0.9% in January 2022.

Due to the revaluation of the minimum wage on August 1, the price increase taken into account for the automatic increase in January corresponds only to the months of July, August, September, October and November.

According to figures published by INSEE on Thursday morning, this price index for “first quantile households” (the poorest 20%) rose 0.4% in November and 1.8% since June. Over a year, it is 6.6%.

Every year, the Government can choose to go beyond the automatic increase by means of “a push”, but there has not been one since 2012. As every year, the panel of economists consulted before each Increase ruled against this possibility.
