Never in the history of football had a World Cup cost so much. Infrastructures, construction of new stadiums, renovation of the old ones… Qatar has spent 220,000 million dollars to organize this competition, according to the private bank Mirabaud. A pharaonic cost compared to previous editions. By comparison, Germany spent $4.3 billion in 2006 and Russia spent $11.6 billion in 2018.
But a very small part of this 220 billion was actually used for the construction of new stadiums. “The costs related to the new stadiums in Qatar are only in the order of 6.5 to 10 billion dollars,” Mirabaud specifies in an analysis published tonight.
An investment in your image
It is not a profitable investment, strictly speaking, for the country, it could have other repercussions in the long term. “Qatar is not going to cover its costs,” John Plassard said on the set of BFM Business. But that is not the objective of the country that wants above all to invest in its image.
