Brussels validates the nationalization of the gas giant Uniper by the German state

The European Commission has just validated on Tuesday the 34.5 billion euro plan to nationalize the German gas company Uniper, suffocated by the end of Russian gas deliveries since September.

Hit hard by the Ukrainian crisis and the stoppage of Russian gas deliveries since September, Uniper CEO Klaus-Dieter Maubach assured during his speech to shareholders on Monday that “without these essential financial means, the very existence of Uniper is in danger.”

A sweeping nationalization plan had been validated by Finnish majority shareholder Fortum in late September, then endorsed by the German government on Monday. The only thing missing was the approval of the European Commission, which today confirmed the plan estimated at 34,500 million euros.

The European Executive has also given the green light to the nationalization of the German subsidiary of the Russian giant Gazprom to save this gas supplier from bankruptcy.
