Everyday electrical objects too often non-compliant and dangerous, points out the DGCCRF

The General Directorate of Competition, Consumption and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) warns of the very high rates of non-compliance and dangerousness of electrical objects.

Coffee makers, dryers and even electric garlands. The electrical objects that we buy and use on a daily basis are too often non-compliant and dangerous. This is indicated by the annual survey of the General Directorate for Competition, Consumption and Fraud Repression (DGCCRF) on the safety of electrical objects, published this Thursday.

Last year, the DGCCRF carried out checks on nearly 600 manufacturers, importers, distributors (specialized stores, hypermarkets and supermarkets, markets, bazaars) and on online sales sites for electrical objects, on nearly 1,520 references. In 2021, a quarter of the controlled establishments were abnormal, underlines the DGCCRF.

Approximately half of the irregularities concerned the safety of electrical products, indicates the service of the Ministry of Economy. In most of the other cases, they were related to correct consumer information, with anomalies related to product labeling rules (21%).

“Improvements” compared to previous surveys

Of a hundred products tested and analyzed in the laboratory, identified as doubtful or likely to represent a danger, 80% were non-compliant, of which more than a third were also dangerous. Among these products are mainly power supplies, electric coffee makers or dryers.

The DGCCRF points out “deficiencies at all levels of the marketing chain, either due to design, placement of markings and constitution of instructions and safety information that are not rigorous or due to the absence of self-verification by the companies responsible for the first placement on the market”.

During this Christmas season, the DGCCRF has been focusing especially on light garlands. “Of the 17 products analyzed, only 1 complied”, summarizes the organization that concludes: “the other products should not have been on the market”. 6 were found to be non-compliant (35%) and 10 were found to be non-compliant and dangerous mainly due to the risk of electric shock.

In total, the DGCCRF issued 106 warnings, 32 enforcement precautionary measures, 17 criminal reports, as well as marketing suspensions (withdrawals or withdrawals). Despite the high rates of non-compliance and dangerousness, the DGCCRF nonetheless notes “improvements” compared to previous surveys.
