The Portuguese expect to spend 5.2% less this Christmas than in 2021, and a quarter say they will not buy gifts, according to a study conducted by IPAM Portounder the coordination of Mafalda Ferreira, published this Monday.
“The average amount to spend on Christmas shopping is 377 euros”, compared to 398 euros, representing a decrease of 5.2%, according to the “Christmas Shopping Study 2022”, conducted between November 26 and December 9 in mainland Portugal, with a sample consisting of 480 persons, older than 18 years.
When comparing “the amounts to be spent in 2022 with 2021, we realize that 42% of respondents say they will spend a lower amount”, it’s in the document.
A quarter (25.1%) of respondents say they will not buy Christmas presents, and in households with children, Christmas presents are only for the children.
Globally, more than two-thirds (67%) of respondents say they buy Christmas gifts for their partner and 63% for parents, siblings and other relatives,” with only 30% of respondents citing an intention to buy gifts for friends ., according to the study.
In the universe of children up to 12 years old, the most frequently purchased gifts are toys (24.2%) and books (15%). For teenagers (between 12 and 18 years old), the choices are clothes/shoes (32%), accessories (22%) and books (18%). According to the survey, these are also the favorite Christmas gift choices for adults, but in a different ratio: clothes/shoes (25%), accessories (22%) and books (17%).
A quarter of Portuguese people plan to do all their shopping online and a fifth in shopping malls, with 10% preferring street shopping.
Of the total respondents, 78.3% receive the Christmas subsidy, of which 2.1% say they will not use this money to make Christmas purchases, while 2.1% will spend the entire subsidy.
One-third of respondents estimate they will spend between 11% and 25% of the Christmas subsidy and another third expect to spend between 26% and 50% of the subsidy, the study said.
