Ukraine needs weapons, but above all tanks to face the Russian army. If France does not deliver Leclerc tanks, it will supply Kyiv AMX-10 RC.
This is the first time that a country has supplied Ukraine with armored vehicles of Western design. The United States promised the American Abrams and the German Leopard 2, but neither of these two models has yet been delivered to the Ukrainians.
Produced since the 1980s, this 15-ton amphibious light armored vehicle is not a tank per se. First, it was not designed for combat, but for intelligence and reconnaissance in conflict zones. If not equipped with tracks, it has 6-wheel drive which makes it fast (80 km/h on-road and 15 km/h off-road), mobile and therefore efficient in certain combat situations.
Superseded by the Jaguar
It is also equipped with 105mm guns and 7.62mm machine guns, one coaxial and the second superstructure in the turret. It can carry up to 38 shells. The RC version, which will be sent to the Ukrainian army, does not have subtitles, which does not make it a weapon of direct confrontation. The Army has about 250.
This donation is based on the replacement of light armored vehicles with Jaguars, armored reconnaissance and combat vehicles. [EBRC]. These 25-tonne models were created by Nexter with Arquus and Thales as part of the Scorpion collaborative combat program.
The General Directorate of Armaments (DGA) has ordered 135 Jaguars from Nexter by 2025, with the goal of 300 by 2030 with a budget of 2,000 million euros provided for in the 2019-2025 military programming law.
The defense ministers of France and Ukraine will exchange “very quickly to define the modalities” of these deliveries, both on the deadlines and on the number of tanks, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces told AFP.
