Former Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) president Carlos Tavares accused TAP’s board of directors of lying to the market about Alexandra Reis’ departure and argued that the company should face sanctions.
In an interview with Antena 1 and Jornal de Negócios, the also former Minister of Economy in the government of Durão Barroso commented on the controversy surrounding former Secretary of State Alexandra Reis and her departure from TAP, as the disagreements with the President of the Executive Committee (CEO ) of the Portuguese company should have been resolved by the board of directors.
“If there were disagreements, it is not solved by removing a person who disagrees, but by going to the board of directors and the board of directors would make its decisions,” defended Carlos Tavares.
The economist even believes that Alexandra Reis should not have even had to leave TAP because of the differences of opinion and could have become a non-executive director.
Carlos Tavares, who is still in the process of leaving TAP’s former secretary of state, said he believed the company lied to the CMVM as there was “other information” about Alexandra Reis’ firing, also noting that this announcement had to be made by the board of directors and not by the CEO.
“It is enough to compare the two communications that have been made to conclude that they say different things. This once again shows the lack of care. Who is responsible to the market is not the chairman of the executive committee. It is the board of directors. , again “, he underlined.
In this sense, the former chairman of the CMVM believes that “there was a violation of the securities code” and that TAP “should be sanctioned”.
“The CMVM must act because there is a violation of the securities code. Under the current code, such a violation is treated as a simple administrative violation, very serious in my opinion, but I think the sanction is relatively limited,” he noted and added that in his opinion this kind of situation should be considered a crime.
Asked about the controversies over government choices, the former ruler defended that there should be a “self-examination” of who is invited and “an evaluation of who is inviting”.
“The people who are invited should ask themselves if they have problems, questions or knowledge for the place. And those who select should take great care,” he stressed, pointing out that the choices are always a matter of “political confidence and of personal knowledge”.
Still talking about the selection process, Carlos Tavares admitted that at this point there is “no certainty” that the people responsible for public positions are “best suited” for that position.
“There has to be an evaluation, not only of everyone’s circumstances, but also of the curriculum. I doubt that in some cases people have the curriculum that is appropriate for the situation. The practical consequence is that we are not sure that people at are the best places there would be in the country,” he affirmed.
On December 27, Finance Minister Fernando Medina fired Alexandra Reis as Secretary of State for Finance, less than a month after inviting her to this government post and after four days of controversy over the €500,000 compensation. that this had been given a career manager by TAP, a company then overseen by the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, who resigned a day later to “take political responsibility” for the cause.
