Learning: France plays with the help to go much further than Germany

The aid for hiring apprentices will be maintained until 2027, at a rate of 6,000 euros per young person in training. This financial incentive has already allowed France to overtake Germany in the number of new contracts signed in recent years.

It is clear: companies that hire apprentices will continue to receive aid for each contract signed. And this until 2027. Simplified with respect to the previous ones, the new system provides for the payment of 6,000 euros per contract to any company that hires apprentices or students with a professional contract. And unlike previous schemes, the premium is now the same regardless of the age of the student and the diploma sought.

6,000 euros is undoubtedly a great expense for the State. Especially since these bonuses attract many companies. Before the State financially encouraged them to hire and train apprentices, the number of contracts signed each year did not exceed 300,000.

Last year, according to the Ministry of Labor, the milestone of 800,000 signed contracts was reached. And the Government has set itself the objective of reaching the milestone of one million contracts signed in 2027, which represents an expense of 6,000 million euros.

More numerous new apprenticeship contracts in France than in Germany

But this huge investment has allowed France to gradually catch up with Germany, where apprenticeships have facilitated the integration of young people into the labor market for decades. If we look at the number of young people who have integrated work-study training in recent years, France has started to do significantly better than Germany in 2021.

According to Destatis, the German Federal Statistical Institute, 466,200 new apprenticeship contracts were signed that year. So that in 2021, less than 1.3 million people were in dual vocational training in 2021 throughout Germany. If we take into account the difference in the size of our respective working populations, France has already managed to overtake Germany.

In 2021, 60% of new apprentices aspired to obtain a higher education diploma

A good omen for the coming years, in terms of employment, since on the other side of the Rhine, the unemployment rate for those under 25 years of age is three times lower than that of France. Knowing that contrary to popular belief, learning is not a dead end for young people who fail in school.

On the contrary, it has even become a means to pursue higher education at a lower cost. In 2021, 60% of students who signed an apprenticeship contract were aiming for a higher education diploma, compared to just 22% for a CAP. While in 2018, the contracts signed were intended for almost 60% of graduates at the Bac Pro, BEP or CAP level.
