Inflation will drop to 9.6% in December. The annual average for 2022 is 7.8%, the highest since 1992

The average inflation rate in 2022 was 7.8%, the highest annual variation since 1992, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) confirmed on Wednesday.

Thus, the consumer price index (CPI) in 2022 was “significantly higher than the variation recorded for the year 2021 as a whole” when it closed at 1.3%, INE says.

Excluding the energy and unprocessed food components, the average rate of change was 5.6%, compared to 0.8% in the previous year.

INE also highlights that the CPI’s year-on-year rate of change “showed a sharp increase throughout 2022, with greater intensity in the first half of the year”.

INE also confirmed that inflation in December 2022 fell by 0.3 percentage point (pp) from the previous month, to a year-on-year change of 9.6%.

Excluding energy and unprocessed foods from the index, the year-over-year change was 7.3% (7.2% in the previous month), the highest rate since December 1993.
