The government works on an anti-inflation basket

A guest of BFMTV and RMC, the Minister of Economy and Finance confirmed the work carried out by Bercy to encourage large retailers to set up a basket made up of 20 basic necessities sold at the lowest possible price.

The government works on an anti-inflation basket. Present on the set of BFMTV, Bruno Le Maire confirmed this morning the information revealed yesterday by Le Parisien. “The general idea is that we all contribute to the fight against inflation, he insisted from the beginning. The State cannot pay for everything and the load must be distributed. We did it in energy prices: we said 280 euros per megawatt hour for everyone the very young”. companies, the State will pay a part, the suppliers will also pay a part.

Specifically, this basket will be made up of 20 basic necessities -food or hygiene products- and on which “distributors would commit to having the lowest possible price so that together we can cushion the inflationary shock.” The Bercy employer also recalled that this price rise, especially strong in food, could last “a few months.”

VAT lever excluded

The Minister of Economy and Finance was questioned about the choice of this device to the detriment of the abolition of VAT. “I’m not sure the few cents difference really makes a difference for households,” he replied. The only thing that matters to me is the consumer. What guarantees me that if I remove the VAT, it will not go to the pockets. from the dealers?

Therefore, to avoid this risk of “diversion” of the profit from the pocket of the consumer to that of the distributor, Bruno Le Maire says that he is more in favor of a “formal commitment, as Olivia Grégoire proposes”.

The government recalled that the project is only in the discussion stage and that its implementation will be done through voluntary commitments by the distributors and not by legislative or regulatory provisions. If it sees the light, the device will be applied to “some twenty references of between 20,000 and 30,000 references in store”, which should not excessively penalize the margins of the distributors, underlines the ministry.
