Could a proposed law cause prices to skyrocket in supermarkets? The large distribution continues to fight against the bill presented by the deputy Frédéric Descrozaille, which it considers an inflationary “scandal” dictated by the large industrialists of the agri-food sector. The latter, denounce excessive fears, evoking unrealistic “apocalyptic predictions” by the voice of the Institute of Liaison of consumer companies (Ilec), which represents the manufacturers of products of the main brands.
“It’s not the first time”
The bosses of the big retail chains have been following each other in recent days to discuss steep double-digit price increases if the Descrozailles bill passes. In response, Richard Panquiault lamented a “mania” that consists of “announcing doomsday predictions that have no chance of happening.” Those who advanced them “will come back later to explain that if it didn’t happen it’s thanks to them, it’s not the first time I’ve heard that,” continued the general manager of Ilec.
The latter spoke of a “consensus” on “tariff increases between 12% and 15%” for food products. “That’s a lot […] but it is not 30%, it is not 40%”, he argued. In addition, these increases from 12 to 15% are increases “before the negotiations” and “we know very well that there is always a strong blow from the distributors,” continued the general manager of Ilec.
