The cuts in electricity production organized by the EDF agents to challenge the Government’s plan on pensions intensified strongly this Thursday, reaching at least the equivalent of twice the consumption of Paris, according to what the CGT and the manager of the RTE high and very high voltage lines. .
“This is the beginning of the fight until withdrawal!!”, writes the CGT Mines Energie federation in a brochure on social networks, announcing “more than 7,000 MW of production reduction without any impact on users”. “It’s huge: we won’t let go!!”, adds the flyer of the national federation of mines and energy FNME CGT.
“Twice the consumption of Paris”
For his part, the head of the French electricity network RTE observes “a drop of 5,000 MW, approximately equivalent to twice the consumption of Paris” to the point of sending the strikers “a message asking them to stop the drops” . “It shouldn’t go any lower,” he told AFP RTE, a utility company tasked with ensuring the security of electricity supply.
The EDF agents, whose special pension regime must disappear for new hires if the reform is adopted, had started production cuts on Wednesday afternoon, in particular at the Cheylas (Isère), Pied-de-Borne ( Lozère) or Sallèles (Ardèche). French nuclear reactors produce between 900 and 1,450 MW of electricity.
